Common Questions

Why should I invest in this Tree System

The ROOTWELL direct-to-root feeder system has been engineered to enhance the tree’s natural ability to absorb air, water and nutrients for many years. A three in one system to promote healthier root systems. This is an affordable permanent system. A smart investment in promoting long-term tree health and growth.

Will The Rootwell fill with dirt?

A limited amount of dirt may enter the cylinder. However, it will not reduce the Rootwell’s effectiveness. In cases of extremely fine soil or sandy conditions, use the Rootwell Sock accessory to prevent sand fill.

What type of fertilizer is recommended?

There are several fertilizers on the market that can be applied directly to roots. Consult your local nursery professional for the recommended brand for your specific plant and its geographic location. Care should be taken not to use fertilizers that will burn the root system. Davey Tree Company has had substantial success with their Arbor Green product used in conjunction with the Rootwell products. See video and study results on our web site.

Why is installation of Rootwell in the planting pit recommended during the initial tree planting?

It is recommended because oxygen, water and nutrients can reach the largest mass of roots so that the tree can establish itself more quickly. As an additional benefit, oxygen directed be Rootwell aids in the decaying process of the burlap sack that contains to roots during shipment. Finally Rootwell will encourage roots to expand beyond the glazed planting pit extending root growth beyond the pit for better root establishment.

Does Rootwell need to be moved when the tree matures?

No, Rootwell will continue to deliver oxygen, water and nutrients to the growing root mass that will develop over the years. However, to support and maintain good tree health, it is suggested that the ROOTWELL ROOT STICK be used in subsequent years added near the drip line for continued root maintenance and root health.

You sell different size Rootwell products, which ones do I use?

This is a good question. There is no limitation on the use of all Rootwell products for use on plants, shrubs or trees, however here are the suggested uses:

ROOT STICK: This 5/8” x 10” product is commonly is used for plants and roses as well as for root maintenance trees and shrubs. It creates sweet spots in hard soils well beyond the planting pit. When used as a maintenance product for tree roots it is typically installed in a zig zag pattern (2’ to 3’ apart) at or near the drip line promoting extended root growth.

Direct Fertilization: Many tree care companies are using the ROOT STICK in conjunction with deep root feeding by simply pushing the stick into the hole created by the feeding probe which provides aeration to the root system increasing the effectiveness of the fertilization.

STANDARD 12”/ STANDARD 18”: (2” in Diameter- 12” or 18” in length). These products are commonly used at the time of planting smaller caliper trees (1” to 4”). Three Rootwell units are placed evenly at the outer edge of the planting pit. The Standard 12” is commonly used for shrubs and for harder soils where 18” in depth is difficult to attain for trees.

For established trees and shrubs the STANDARD 12” and 18” are ;used in the closest proximity where the tree roots exist. They can be installed with the use of an electric drill and auger (available through Rootwell).

PRO: The PRO is the Rootwell mighty giant 3” x 18” which provides maximum open surface area for air, water and nutrient movement through the soil. It is commonly used when transplanting larger trees, placed inside and outside the planting pit. It is also an excellent maintenance product for larger specimen trees.

How long does the Rootwell last?

It is fully conceivable it will last for the life of the tree.

What other products are comparable to Rootwell?

None! Rootwell’s three in one patented design is the only product engineered to deliver all the essential elements of life to the root system; oxygen, water and nutrients.

Are there any other uses for Rootwell?

Yes, they are also used as a means to collect water for extraction or evaporation from the tree root area where the soils are very wet. This will assist the tree or shrub to get established.

How do I protect the trees from sunburn, weedwacker’s and general abuse on the base?

Young trees need protection against rodents, frost cracks, sunscald, and lawn mowers and weed whackers. Mice and rabbits frequently girdle small trees by chewing away the bark at snow level. Since the tissues that transport nutrients in the tree are located just under the bark, a girdled tree often dies in the spring when growth resumes.

Weed whackers are also a common cause of girdling. Plastic guards are an inexpensive and easy control method.

Frost cracking is caused by the sunny side of the tree expanding at a different rate than the colder shaded side. This can cause large splits in the trunk. Sunscald can occur when a young tree is suddenly moved from a shady spot into direct sun. Rootwell’s ‘Bark Protector’ tree wraps can be used to protect the trunk from sunscald and does not entrap moisture which will harm tree bark
