In 1997 The City of Royal Oak replanted several trees in Mauldin Park after they had lost approximately 40 trees.
Rootwells were installed in 1997 after the trees again went into strees due to severe soil compaction
The same tree in 2009. Two years prior the park was a staging site for sewer construction with heavy equipment and heavy materials being stored near these trees. The Rootwells allowed the trees to maintain good health during construction and they continue to prosper.
In September 2009 arborist Steve Turner air spaded around the trees to determine the effect of the Rootwells underground. He discovered large masses of tree roots around the Rootwells and found diving roots around 75% of the Rootwells installed in these trees.
