Do you love the way hollies look around Christmas time?

Would you love to be able to grow your own?

Hollies are beautiful shiny red berries and bright glossy green leaves scream Christmas. They can be grown inside or out and can be bought at most nurseries. Hollies can add color to your winter garden as well as in the summer.

On this beautiful December Friday, we will be sharing about how to care for hollies.

  1. Plant hollies in the spring or the fall. According to Gardening Know How:

The relatively low temperatures combined with higher rainfall will make settling into the new location much less stressful for the holly bush.

  2. Southern Living says that hollies can grow 12-15 feet wide and 15-20 feet tall. So when choosing where you want to plant them, make sure you have those dimensions in mind.
  3. Hollies grow in most soils and are very tolerant. but they prefer well drained slightly acidic soil in full sun.
  4. Make sure to plant male varieties as well as female or make sure to find a plant that does not need a male to produce berries.
  5. When you plant the hollies, make sure to install rootsticks. Rootsticks will provide your plant with the water, oxygen and nutrients it needs to grow strong and healthy.
  6. After you have planted the hollies, for the first week water daily and for the following month water twice a week.

Have you ever grown hollies in your garden indoors or out? Do you use hollies in your Christmas decor?
