6 Tips to Help Your Landscape Survive Scorching HeatHave you been wondering how your landscape will make it through this summer?

With temperatures above 90 degrees, we are all watching our landscapes struggling to stay alive. With yellow spots on our lawns and our plants withering, we may wonder if all our hard work gone to waste. Today, we are going to discuss how to help your landscape survive this scorching heat. Your hard work does not have to be wasted and with a little help your landscape will be back to looking as beautiful as ever.

Here are 6 tips to help your landscaping survive the scorching heat:

  1. Mulch Like Crazy
Have any leftover dry grass and leaves? Apply as much as 4 inches deep of that leftover dry grass and leaves to your garden. Be careful not to touch the stems of any plants. After that, water the plants. One key point here is to make sure the grass or leaves you use have not been treated with any herbicides or pesticides. If you do not have any dry grass, there is no need to worry. You can use fresh clippings. You will want to apply a thin layer adding more as the grass dries out.
  2. Water Early or Late
In our article, 4 Ways to Save Money Watering Your Lawn and Trees, we discussed the best time to water is at dawn and dusk. Watering during the middle of the day will only dry out your grass and watering at nighttime will cause mold.
  3. Stay Off The Grass
When your grass is drying out, the best thing is stay off the grass. Hold off on federalizing, mowing and playing until it’s been watered. If you have to mow the lawn, set your blade at about 3 inches. Also, if you don’t need the grass clippings for your garden let them sit on your lawn.
  4. Water Daily
Annual flowers and vegetable gardens need to be watered daily especially those in containers.
  5. Don’t Over Water
Yes, believe it or not, but you can over water. Before watering, check to see how dry out the soil is. If the soil is wet to the depth of about 3 to 4 inches deep, you won’t need to water.
  6. Install Rootwells and Rootsticks
The best thing that you can do for you landscape is to install Rootwells for your trees and Rootsticks for your garden. By having them installed during a drought, all you would do is pour water down the well and the essential water, oxygen and nutrients that your trees and plants need would be supplied.
