  • After raking up all those leaves, shred them into mulch and sprinkle the shredded leaves on your lawn for extra nutrients.
  • Prepare your trees for winter by pruning them.
  • Help keep the rodents away from your garden this winter by adding a 6-inch layer of organic material after the ground freezes.
  • Protect your perennials and shrub beds by adding chopped leaves or pine needles as mulch. The leaves or pine needles will help to keep your plants warm if any extreme temperatures strike.
  • Looking for a free, organic weed killer? Use the remains of any dead plants to kill weeds and feed the soil.
  • Better Homes and Gardens recommends to protect your newly planted trees from critters eating their bark by placing a wire or commercial tree guard about the tree.
  • Screen in your evergreens to help protect them for the winter winds.
  • Prune all diseased leaves and other foliage from evergreens.
  • In October, fertilize your lawn. This will provide needed nutrients as your lawn prepares for winter.
  • Where you live and the local rainfalls will determine how often you should water your lawn or if you should stop watering altogether until spring. Make sure you lawn gets about an inch of water ever 14-21 days in warmer temperatures.
  • Fall is also a time to reseed your lawn if needed.
  • When planting new trees and shrubs, make sure to install aeration tubes. Do this all before the ground freezes. Aeration tubes provide oxygen, nutrients and water right to the root zone which help the roots to grow deep and strong.
