Landscaping Tips

U.S. Gardening Region Map

  • The Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends pruning trees and shrubs this month while they are still dormant. If you are pruning trees or shrubs that bloom in the summer, only prune the current year’s growth.
  • One of the best ways to protect your lawn this winter is by limiting the amount of traffic that happens on your frozen grass. If there is too much traffic, you may find bald spots on your lawn when spring arrives.
  • According to Better Homes and Gardens, plant your bare-root trees, shrubs, berries and grapes this month if you live along the coast. If you live more inland, wait until the temperatures are above freezing to plant.

Fruit and Vegetable Tips

  • Make sure to harvest herbs like parsley and chives; and make sure to harvest vegetables like kale.

Perennial and Annual Tips

  • If you live in a frost free part of the region, try adding a little color to your landscape by setting out pansies and primrose.

General Gardening Tips

  • Check to make sure your mulch hasn’t blown away. If it had simply reapply it.
  • One of the biggest threats to your landscape during the winter is drought. Foliage still needs water during the winter. Often times the ground is frozen and trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers are unable to extract the necessary water. To help with this install a direct-to-root water system before the ground freezes.
  • Organic Gardening shares the signs of frost damage – blacken leaves or branches. If you find any in your yard, leave them along to spring.
