In July, we posted an article called The Fab Five Herbs to Grown At Home. Now, we are taking it to the next level and introduce Herb Mondays.

Herb Mondays is a new series that will focus on one herb each week. Fall is here and it is time to move outdoor gardening inside. This new series will provide helpful tip and tricks of the trade to grow herbs indoors. Today, we will look at a few tricks to growing herbs in your home.

  • Light
Herbs love the light. According to The National Gardening Association, herbs need 4 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Soil
Soil is only second when it comes to caring for herbs indoors. Generally most herbs do well in soils that have a pH of 6-7.
  • Fertilizer
Feed potted herbs liquid fertilizer or organic fish once a week while they are actively growing.
  • Watering
“Watering is not a trivial matter with herbs.” We recommend the Rootstick for herbs and any potted plant. You install the Rootstick into the potted herb plant and pour water into the Rootstick. You will know that your herbs need watering by touching the soil, if the soil is dry, you will need to water.

Remember to inspect your herbs daily for any pests such as spider mites, aphids, scale insects and whiteflies. A quick way to avoid pests is to use an insecticidal soup and if the plant is portable, dip the above ground part into the soup.
