June Gardening Tips for the Southwest

How often should you water your vegetable plants?

What is the recommended height for your grass?

Summer is almost here and if you’re like me, you’ve been spending most of your time in the yard. Whether it’s planting new flowers, pulling up weeds, or mowing the lawn this has been a great month to spend outside.

Today, we are continuing with our monthly regional gardening tips. Every Monday we post an article designed for a specific region of the United States. This week is the Southwest Region of the country.

Take a look below at the different tips for your yard this month.

Landscaping Tips:

  • Last month we mentioned the recommended heights for your lawn depending on the type of grass you have. Here are the recommendations again, in case you missed them:
    1. St. Augustine and Bahia: 3 to 4 inches
    2. Centipede: 1.5 to 2 inches
    3. Dwarf St. Augustine: 2.5 inches
    4. Make sure to only apply herbicides to the areas of your lawn with weeds. Doing this will help to rid your lawn on the weeds while keeping it healthy.

Fruit and Vegetable Tips:

  • Some great vegetables to plant this month are southern peas, sweet potatoes, and okra.
  • Continue planting heat-tolerant herbs like rosemary and basil.
  • The growing season isn’t over yet. If you have any plants that are dead or old, remove them to promote more growth.

Annual and Perennial Tips:

  • The Old Farmers’ Almanac has a really great tip to encourage a bushier growth in your annual and perennial herbs. They recommend pinching them off.
  • Add some color to your yard by planting blue sage and zinnia.

General June Gardening Tips:

  • Organic Gardening recommends making sure to water your plants during dry spells, including your potted plants. Water in the cool of the morning.
  • Make sure that during dry spells, you are watering your vegetable garden at least once a week and that it is receiving a least an inch of water.

Summary

With these tips you can create the perfect to-do list for this month. Happy gardening!
