March Gardening Tips for the Pacific Northwest

Spring is coming. For a gardener, those can be some of the happiest words they have heard in a while.

If you live in the Pacific Northwest, it is time to get busy in your garden. Make sure that you have everything in order this spring by checking out the following gardening tips.

  • Check your lawn to see if there are any bald spots. If there are, Better Homes and Gardens recommends to “scratch up soil and toss on seed.” They also recommend to keep the seedbed moist and to use straw as a light dressing to protect the seed from injury.
  • According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac you can still plant trees and shrubs this month. It is recommended to do it in a cool and wet place. Do not forget to apply a mix of compost and mulch in to the planting hole.

Fruit and Vegetable Tips

  • Organic Gardening recommends to start planting your potatoes this month. You can add some onions and bare-root asparagus to plant along with your potatoes.

General Gardening Tips

  • Do you have a slug problem? Once the bulbs start to grow, the slugs come out. BHG recommends to spray later this month to help treat trees and shrubs. Make sure to spray the trees and shrubs that are most popular with the slugs.
  • For mites, spray a horticultural oil.
  • This month, check your compost bin. You should have some new material to add for spring mulching.
