Wondering what you can get done in your garden this month?

The end of March marks the beginning of spring and in the Southeastern part of the county, spring definitely feels as though it is here. With spring already underway, it is time to get out into the garden and yard.

March Gardening Tips

Today, we would like to share with our Southeastern neighbors gardening tips and tricks for this month. We will be looking into four different areas, landscaping tips, fruit and vegetables tips, perennial tips, and general gardening tips for the month.

Landscaping Tips:

  • With the end of dormant season upon us, make sure to prune all trees and shrubs before any new growth starts.
  • While some argue that the fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn, once the threat of frost is gone, you can fertilize your lawn this spring.
  • Apply a pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn to help prevent any weeds that come up this summer.

Fruit and Vegetables Tips:

  • According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, you can continue to plant hardy vegetable crops that produce crops quickly. Crops like radishes. For tips on growing radishes, check out our article, How to Grow Radishes in 5 Easy Steps.
  • In our article, 12 Frost Tolerate Vegetables to Plant in Early Spring, you will find a list of vegetables to plant now.
  • Once the soil’s temperature is above 60 degrees, you can plant warm season annuals like tomatoes, sweet potatoes and watermelon.

General Gardening Tips for March:

  • Plant spring and summer flowering bulbs like dahlias and cannas.
  • This is a great time to check your sprinkler system. If there are any needed repairs go ahead and make them.
