Think Spring – How to Start Preparing Your Garden
Now that it’s the New Year, are you already thinking spring?
Did you think that January is too early for spring prep?
The weather warmed over the weekend here in Michigan. While the cold temperatures are coming back over this coming week, all I could think about was spring. I love the fall color, but spring is my favorite season. Everything comes alive and starts over. Plus, I get to spend more time in my garden.
Spring Prep Already?
Yes, I am aware that it is still January, but there is never a down moment for a gardener. Today, I wanted to share some tips on what we can do this month to prepare for spring. Before you know it, the soil will be defrosting and trees will shake of the ice and it will be spring.
Let’s Start Dreaming
This month is a great time to plan. You can start by getting or creating a map of your landscape. Add your house and anything that is currently on your landscape that you plan on keeping – like that beautiful oak tree. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What kinds of trees do I want to plant?
- Do I want to build an Island Oasis?
- What do I want to change about my landscape?
- What do I want to add to my garden?
- Do I want a flower garden?
- Do I want an eatable garden?
January is the perfect time to dream and it gives you a great starting point.
Time in the Tool Shed
It is time to get into that shed or garage and sharpen those tools! Tools that you can sharpen now to prepare for your gardening include:
- Shears
- Mowers
- Shovels

Extra time this month might well be spent getting the garden tools ready for spring. Sharpen and oil tools such as shovels, shears, mowers and the like. Power tools such as weed eaters and power mowers may benefit from a good tune-up. Could the wheelbarrow use a fresh coat of paint?
