In the Midwest and Mountain regions of the United States, it is finally starting to feel like spring. Warmer temperatures and thunderstorms have made their way into our lives again and I, for one, couldn’t be happier to say goodbye to a long, cold winter.

Here are April’s gardening tips for the Midwest and Mountain region.

Landscaping Tips

  • Spring cleaning will be on your to-do list not only for the inside of your home, but also for your yard. Put your gloves on and pick a day when the sun in out and head out into your garden.
  • A quick spring cleaning list might look like:
  • Remove all winter mulch
  • Rake up any leaves
  • Remove all dead plants.
  • If you fertilize your lawn in the spring, this month is the perfect time to do so. According to Home Depot, “second only to the fall, spring is next most important time of the year to fertilize your lawn.”

Fruits and Vegetables Tips

  • To make sure you have these frost tolerant vegetables all spring long, make sure to plant them in succession.

Perennials/Annuals

  • If any perennials are overcrowded, make sure to take some time to divide them. You can even save money by replanting them in another part of your lawn.

General Gardening Tips

  • According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, make sure to prune all spring-blooming shrubs this month after they have finished flowering.
  • Celebrate Earth Day, April 22 by planting some new trees.
  • When planting new trees, don’t forget to install aeration tubes.
  • According to Better Homes and Gardens, in the more southern parts of the Midwest, as soon as all threat of frost is gone you can start planting tomatoes, basil and bell peppers.
