April Gardening Tips

On this beautiful spring Monday, we are focusing on the Southeastern Region of the United States.

US Gardening Region MapLandscaping Tips:

  • If you are looking to plant trees and shrubs this spring, right now is a great time to do it.
  • It is time for a little spring clean up. Prior to adding a fertilizer, make sure to rake your entire lawn.

Fruit and Vegetables:

  • It’s time to plant your warmer season crops like, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants.
  • You can also start planting squash, cucumbers, sweet corn and beans.
  • When planting corn, the Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends planting two or more rows. Planting this way will achieve better pollination.
  • Start an herb garden this month. Start your herb garden with basil, rosemary, mint and parsley.

Annuals/ Perennials:

  • A great way to prepare your annual beds is by adding compost to the soil. Another quick tip is to add a slow release fertilizer.
  • Wait until your perennials are done blooming before you prune them.

General Gardening Tips:

  • If cold weather returns, Organic Gardening recommends covering your plants with a blanket. By doing this when warmer weather returns, you simply remove the blanket.
  • Make sure your garden is receiving at least 1 inch of rainfall a week.
