Landscaping Tips

  • Give your shrubs and trees plenty of water before winter.
  • According to Better Homes and Gardens, you don’t want to try and break off ice when it forms on the trees. If you do you risk breaking the branches. Instead let them melt naturally.

Fruit and Vegetable

  • Make sure to cover your strawberries 2 inches in straw.
  • Gather all the fruit and nuts off the ground to help reduce disease and pests.

Perennial and Annual Tips

  • The Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends adding protective mulch to your perennial garden once the ground has frozen about an inch or two.

General Gardening Tips

  • If you have a compost pile make sure to turn your pile before winter sets in.
  • Protect your evergreen trees from the winter by wrapping them in burlap.
  • It’s time to purchase your ice-melting products.
  • Organic Gardening has a great tip for shoveling your driveway. Take the time this month to stake out your driveway. That way when the snow falls, you will know where your driveway is.

Christmas Tree Tips

  • Before heading to the tree farm to pick out your Christmas tree make sure to measure the ceiling of the room where you are putting your tree. Also take time to measure your tree stand. Those measurements will help to make sure your tree fits when you get it home.
  • Make sure the branches of the tree bend and do not snap.
  • You want the stump of the tree to feel moist.

Take Away

As we enter into the winter season, make sure your garden is prepared by using the tips above.
