Gardening Tips and Tricks For May

May Gardening Tips & Tricks

Are you unsure when you should plant your vegetables?

Would you like to know a trick that can save you money on your trees and shrubs?

May is surprisingly a difficult month to garden. You look outside and see beautiful sun and a warm breeze. However, Mother Nature can change her mind and suddenly you’re watching your weekend’s work list ruined by a freak snowstorm if you live in northern climates.

Don’t worry though. Today, we are going to share with you some tips and tricks of the trade on surviving the month of May.

  • Pay attention to the weather reports. If you noticed that the temperatures are dropping one night this coming week, don’t be afraid to cover up your newly planted flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  • If you are going to purchase perennials, make sure you get them before they flower. According to GardeningTips.org:

Purchase annuals without flowers so that you can enjoy the blooms longer. Choose shorter bushy plants because the larger ones are more established already and may not transplant as well.”

  • Install Rootwells and Root Sticks. These are perfect to help your trees, shrubs, and flowers get the oxygen, nutrients, and water they need to grow strong and last the hot summer days.
  • If your trees, shrubs, and plants are growing in a strong green color, then all is good. Your plants are full of health. However, if they are growing in yellow or a lighter color, that plant may need some extra TLC.
  • One quick and easy way to stimulate root growth in your annuals is by loosening the roots up prior to planting them.
  • The Garden Helper reports that lilies, cannas, dahlias, and gladiolas are perfect for May planting. You can really plant any summer flower now.
  • Looking to plant some vegetables? Go ahead this month and plant carrots, potatoes, beans, peas, and corn. If you want to plant tomatoes, make sure to wait until mid-month to do so.
