November Gardening Tips & Tricks

Are you looking for how to care for your garden this month?

Happy Friday. With many parts of the county heading into winter, November can seem like a tricky month to garden, but it does not have to be. Today, we are sharing some tips for your November gardens.

Transplanting Trees and Shrubs

Believe it or not, but now and the next few months are the best time to transplant your trees and shrubs. The reason is, according to Fairygardens In The Flower Patch, is that trees and shrubs have entered into the start of dormancy and will transplant safely.

Pruning

November is the perfect month to prune your evergreens. Remember, the first step to perfectly prune evergreens is to remove all the dead and diseased branches.

Lawn Care

  • Fertilizing your lawn for the winter months will encourage strong roots and actually improve the color or your lawn.
  • Always keep the leaves you rake up, they are great for you lawn as compost.
  • If you do not want to rank up all those leaves then don’t. Turn those leaves into mulch by mowing over them. This will add nutrients to your lawn.

Go Ahead and Spray

If you were wondering when a good time to spray your landscape is, now is a great time. Over the winter there are insects and diseases that can kill your plants, trees and shrubs. Once all the leaves fall and what you want to spray is bare, it is safe to spray. Make sure to follow the instructions on the label.

Tree Planting

The best time to plant trees is when they enter a stage of dormancy in the fall according to The Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association.  Fred Hower states:

During dormancy, no growth occurs in the upper branches and attention is given to growing a stronger root system. This stronger root system will better support foliage growth in the spring.

Installing aeration tubes around newly planted trees will allow for the delivery of water, oxygen and nutrients deep in the soil or root zone. Rootwell Product Inc.’s Pro318 is a scientifically proven aeration tube system that provides the ultimate solution to help trees thrive. The Pro318 is the direct-to-root feeder system that encourages your trees to take in air, water and nutrients for the best chance of survial.
