Gardening Tips and Tricks for the October Gardener

October Gardening Tips

What is a weed? A weed is a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

While you and I may not always see a weed as a plant with virtues, I am glad Ralph Waldo Emerson did. Every month, we post gardening tips and tricks specially designed to that particular month. This month we will do this same. So get out your calendars and let’s start preparing for this month.

The temperatures are lower and the nights are chilly, which means only one thing – fall is here. Fall is the time of pumpkin spice lattes, apple picking, football watching, donuts eating, and apple cider drinking. Most people I talk to love the fall. Even though it isn’t the beginning of a new year, fall seems to represent a new beginning.

This month, though, there is still much to do in the yard. Last year, we posted an article about all these to-dos called October Gardening Tips and Tricks. Today, we are expanding and detailing that list.

October Gardening Tips

  • Tulips

If you haven’t planted your spring tulips yet, you still have time. Tulips are annual flowers, meaning that we have to plant them every year. In an article we wrote, 5 Step to Plant and Care for Tulips, you can learn how to plant and care for your tulips.

  • Lawn Care

It is almost time to exchange that mower for a snow blower, but not quite yet. We recommend mowing your lawn as long as it continues to grow. To set your lawn up really nice for next year, don’t forget to fertilize it this month.

  • Install a Direct-to-Root Watering System

Trees grow as strong as their roots and the best way to create deep roots is with a direct to root watering system. Install them now so that in the spring your trees are strong, healthy and beautiful. Rootwell’s Pro318s are the perfect choice as they are scientifically proven to provide the oxygen, nutrients and water your trees needs to flourish.

  • Protect Against Frost

Frost is a frustrating word for any gardener but there are ways to prepare your garden for it. According to Better Homes and Gardens,

“Prolong the growing season for plants by tossing a sheet or other nonplastic material over plants when frost is predicted. Remove covers in the morning, after the sun has warmed the air.”
