Tried and True Ways to Prep Your Garden for Winter

  • Start by cutting back any dry stems of perennials to soil level.
  • If you have any dead plant remains, you are in luck. Those dead plant remains make a wonderful compost that can kill weeds.
  • On all your evergreen plants and shrubs, cut off any diseased greenery and if any of your mulch has disease- toss it.
  • Our good friends at Better Homes and Gardens recommend to a 6-inch of organic material after the ground freezes if you are looking to fend off any rodents.
  • To protect your perennials and shrub beds, use chopped leaves or pine needles for mulch. By adding this type of mulch you are protecting those plants for the effects of any extreme temperature that may encounter.
  • Are your evergreens an exposed broad-leaved type? The best way to protect them is to take burlap screen and send the screens around the shrub.
