Are you ready to start off the New Year planning your garden?

Are you already longing for spring and dirt under your fingernails?

Here in Michigan, we are about to head into some of the grayest months of the year. This type of weather always gets me anxious for the spring. I get anxious for warm sunshine and to getting back to gardening. If you’re anything like me, you are already starting to feel the gardening bug, too.

In the meantime, I would like to share some tips and tricks for the month of January to keep us all busy as we wait for the sun to return. Even if you are not in the northeast region of the country, these tips and tricks are for you as well.

January Gardening Tips and Tricks

  • Poinsettias: If you are looking to keep your poinsettias alive after the holiday season, please make sure to check out our recently published article called, How to Care For Poinsettias This Holiday Season. You may even be able to get your poinsettia to re-bloom.
  • House Plants: Here are a few tips on keeping house plants alive over the winter.
    1. If you keep your plants on the window sill, make sure to check that they do not get too cold. If they are too cold, The Old Farmer’s Almanac has a great suggestion of place cardboard between the glass and the plant.
    2. Are you seeing some aphids on your houseplants? Mix together (equal parts) rubbing alcohol and water and a drop of dish washing detergent. Then gently apply the mixture to the plants.
    3. Very carefully prune your houseplants. Now is not the time to go crazy on pruning.
  • Start Dreaming: Right now is the perfect time to start dreaming of your spring garden. Make a diagram and research. Ask yourself what you want your garden to look like and do you want a vegetable garden this year?
