What vegetables should I plant in my garden?

Summertime is officially here. It wasn’t too long ago that we were fighting against snow and frost, and now we will be facing the heat the summer brings.

Today, we are continuing with our monthly regional gardening series. Every Monday, we publish a monthly gardening tip article for each region in the United States and this Monday, we are sharing about the Northeast region.

June Gardening Tips

Landscaping Tips:

U.S. Gardening Region Map

  • Better Homes and Garden recommends that if you didn’t fertilize in May, make sure to do so this month if you have a cool season lawn. http://www.bhg.com/gardening/gardening-by-region/northeast/june-tips-the-northeast/
  • Remember when mowing to only remove about a third of the grass’ height. For more tips of caring for your lawn, visit 5 Tips to the Lawn of Your Dreams. /5-tips-lawn-dreams/
  • Add mulch around your trees. The mulch will keep the soil more moist.

Fruit and Vegetable Tips:

  • If you are growing asparagus, make sure to stop cutting as soon as the yield decreases. Then spread compost or well-rotted manure over the bed.
  • In our article published last Friday, 5 Summer Time Vegetables to Plant Now, you will find information about which vegetables to plant now and how to do it. /5-summer-time-vegetables-plant-now/
  • If you are growing basil and see a flower forming, make sure to remove it. This will promote an overall bushier growth in the plant.

Annual and Perennial Tips:

  • According to Almanac.com, it’s time to pull up your tulips and compost them. This will give the soil a break before you plant them again in the fall. http://www.almanac.com/gardening/tips/MA/Everett
  • June blooming flowers include: clematis, coreopsis, delphiniums, shasta daisies, foxgloves and oriental poppies.
  • Cosmos, marigolds and petunias add some color to your summer flower beds.
  • If any of your perennials die make sure to remove them right away to help encourage new growth.
