What fruits and vegetables can I plant in May?

The month of May is here and it is beginning to look a lot more like spring. It is time to finally get to that gardening and lawn “to do” list that we have been putting off. To help us with that to do list, every Monday here at Rootwell Products Inc, we publish gardening tips for specific regions.

Today, we are focusing on the Mountain and Midwest Region of the United States. Look through the lists below for suggested gardening tips in areas like landscaping, fruit and vegetables, annuals/perennials and general tips.

May Gardening Tips

Landscaping Tips:

  • Weeding – everyone hates to do it, but right now is the best time to invest into weeding. Get the weeds while they are small and before they have gone to seed.
  • Lawn Mowing – The Old Farmer’s Almanac recommends to only take off a third of the total length of your grass when mowing and to mow only when the grass is dry.
  • Watering – If you haven’t yet started watering your lawn, it is time to start watering.

Fruit and Vegetable Tips:

  • If you planted rhubarb, it is time harvest. Remember that instead of cutting down the leaf stalks simply pull off the leaves.
  • Go ahead and plant sweet potatoes, sweet corn, pumpkins melons, and green beans. It is time to harden off tomato plants to get them ready to plant outdoors.
  • You can also continue to plant cool season crops like beets, carrots and lettuce.

Annuals/Perennial Tips:

  • The time is finally here. It is time to start planting warm season flowers like dahlias, gladiolas and cannas.
  • Better Homes and Gardens recommends dividing your perennials this month. For tips on how to do just that, please check out our article How to Divide Perennials the Easy Way.

General Gardening Tips for May:

A Quick Note on Mulching:

  • Towards the later part of the month, it should be warm enough to add a layer of mulch.
  • Mulch can help prevent weeds, prevent diseases and even reserve moisture.
  • Our friends at Better Homes and Gardens reports that the rule of thumb is to apply mulch to your trees, shrubs and flower beds once the tulips have faded.
