3 Questions You Will Want to Ask Yourself before Planting this Spring

“Some years are more challenging or fruitful than others and sometimes the harshest seasons are the best teachers”.
~ Lorene Edwards Forkner

This past season is already turning out to be one of those “harshest seasons”. The winter was long and cold. The spring season is a welcomed relief with warmer temperatures. Instead of snow, it is raining and even in some areas of the country, people are starting to see green.

With spring planting getting underway, we wanted to share with you 3 questions to ask yourself before you start planting. These questions will help to address your plants, trees and shrubs not only their chances of survival, but their best chance to grow and produce something amazing.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself about Before Planting in the Spring

  1. Does the soil allow for the plants to thrive?
When we purchase property, whether it is our home or commercial property, the type of soil the property has may be low on our list of “must haves”. However, when we look to plant or growing anything, the soil has a huge part to play. In fact, according to Cornell University, soil is “your key to success.”

Check for drainage: One common term you may have heard when preparing to plant is the term “well-drained soil”. Most plants thrive in well drained soil. If the soil has too much clay in it, water may pool and hurt the plant’s survival.

Additional items to look for when examining soil for planting include what color the soil is. For example, dark soil indicates a higher amount of organic matter.

  2. Is there a way to encourage deep roots to take place?
We’ve all heard that saying, deep roots for strong trees. That concept has been applied to almost everything we grow in our gardeners and sometimes it’s applied to even people. There is a way to encourage deep root growth in your trees, shrubs and plants. We will share that answer with you shortly.
  3. What happens if a drought comes?
It would be devastating to invest so much time and money with all of your spring planting and then to have a summer drought. The summer of 2012 was one of those summers. The drought destroyed crops all over the country as we experienced one of the hottest and driest summers since 1956.

The Answer

To protect your spring plants, we highly recommend installing aeration tubes. Aeration tubes are designed for trees and as well as shrubs and plants. They are scientifically proven in a study done by the University of Arizona to increase root growth and above ground growth.

Even if you have clay soil or experience a drought, the aeration tubes help to keep your foliage alive by delivering water to the root zone. All you have to do is pour water down the cylinder tube and oxygen, nutrients and water are provided deep into the soil. The roots of the tree or shrub or plant then seek that water by growing deeper into the ground.

Summary

Before a harsh season comes and has the opportunity to teach anyone, install aeration tubes and save yourself the hassle.
