How to Grow Hollies

  • Hollies are grown on both deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees. They have bright red berries with green foliage. Many hollies have foliage that is glossy and prickly.
  • Shrubs and trees that produce hollies come in a male form as well as a female. The female plant is the one that produces the red berries. In order to do that there must be a male plant nearby according to Garden.org.
  • The size of holly producing shrubs and trees can range from 6 – 40 feet. So make sure to check with the nursery when you select your holly producing shrubs and trees.
  • Hollies generally prefer a site with full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil.
  • Some species of hollies, such as inkberry (Ilex glabra), are adapted to wet areas.
  • Most hollies prefer slightly acidic soil; however, some species, such as winterberry (I. verticillata), require more acidic soils.
  • The best time to plant is either in the fall or spring.
  • Make sure to have good spacing between your shrubs or trees. You will want to have at least 5 feet if not more.
  • When it is time to plant, make sure to dig a hole that is almost 3 times the size of the root ball.
  • Lastly, install aeration tubes along with your evergreen shrubs and trees. An aeration tube is a direct to root watering system. This product will provide your evergreens with water, oxygen and nutrients they need to survive and thrive.
