When to Expect Sweet Cherries at Your Local Farmers Market
Did last year’s drought prevent you from enjoying the taste of Michigan’s sweet cherries?
Are you wondering when you’ll see sweet cherries at the grocery store?
Can you believe that the weekend is already here? Today, we are sharing all about Michigan sweet cherries.
Last year, the cherry crop suffered from the drought. The delectable fruit was hard to come by. If you were able to find them, the cherries were expensive. We wanted to know if that was going to happen this year.
I am a huge fan of Michigan sweet cherries. For me, they communicate summer time. I have memories of going to Traverse City during the Cherry Festival. Do you have any experiences like this? Cherries were always such a big treat that I look forward to.
This year, I have been anticipating when the sweet cherries will show up in my local grocery store. I started doing some digging to find out. I stumbled upon this great blog by an orchard in Michigan. Here is what the King Orchards reported about when the sweet cherries will be ready,
The cherry crop is coming along beautifully. We received 8/10 s of an inch of rain last night which was very much appreciated. So cherries are sizing up. The sweet cherries are probably going to start around July 10-12. We will pick as early as we feel they are sweet enough and dark enough color.”
They also reported that the tart cherries should be in stores about a week after that. While this particular orchard does not have a u-pick for cherries, they reported that the two other orchards that do should be ready for customers only a few days after their orchards are ready.
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, the National Cherry Festival is taking place from June 29 through July 6, 2013 in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan.
Have you ever been to Traverse City during the Cherry Festival? Do you have any memories about sweet or tart cherries? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
