Summertime watering tips

How often should you be watering your lawn?

Summer is here, temperatures are rising, the sun is hot and our plants need watering. Today, we are sharing with you 8 summertime watering tips. These tips will help keep you keep your water bills down and your yard looking green and fresh.

Today is Beginner Gardening Wednesday (BGW). While BGW is a series designed for beginner gardeners, these tips are perfect for any stage or level gardener you might be.

Summertime Watering Tips – Your Lawn

  1. When watering your lawn, make sure to saturate it. In other words, it will be soggy under your feet.
  2. When you saturate your lawn, you do not have to water as frequently. An easy way to tell when it is time to water is by walking on your grass. If you have left footprints in your grass – it is time to water.
  3. If you water mid-day, the sun will dry out your grass and if you water at night, mold could start to grow. This why we recommend watering in the morning at dusk for best results.

Watering Your Trees, Shrubs and Plants

  1. Add mulch to help your soil to retain its moisture. Having moist soil helps to keep your plants, trees and shrubs well watered.
  2. Mulching on a budget? Use dry grass or leaves if you are looking to save money on mulch this year.
  3. Water your annuals and vegetable gardens daily. Especially if they are in containers like pots.

  4. Consider installing an aeration tube for your plants, trees and shrubs. Rootwell Product Inc.’s aeration tubes, the Pro 318 for trees and Rootsticks for plants and shrubs promote deep root growth by providing oxygen, water and nutrients to the root zone. Added bonus: if you are experiencing a drought, you can simply pour water down the aeration tube, making watering during a drought really easy.

  5. To check if it is time to water, stick your finger into the soil. If the soil is still moist about 2 inches in, you don’t need to water. If not, then it is time to saturate with water.

Summary

Don’t let the summer’s heat get your landscape down. By using these tips, you will be able to keep your garden, lawn, trees, shrubs and plants looking beautiful all summer long.
