For those of us who live in the Northeastern part of the United States, spring has been a long time coming. While maybe not too patiently, we have waited and it finally feels like spring. Trees everywhere are budding, grass is changing from that dead brown color to a lighter green and every time I see the temperatures in the 50s, I’m tempted to wear shorts.

Every Monday, we publish articles that focus on monthly gardening tips for a certain part of the county. This week, we are publishing your April gardening tips today.

April Gardening Tips

Today, we will cover landscaping tips, fruit and vegetable tips, perennial/annual tips and lastly we’ll provide for you some general gardening tips.

Landscaping Tips

  • The Old Farmer’s Almanac has a great remedy for any dead spots on your lawn, first loosen the soil, add in some compost, sprinkle some seed grass, rake the area lightly, pack in the area and lastly spread a thin layer of straw.

Fruits and Vegetable Tips

  • If you love fresh strawberries, blackberries or raspberries, this is the time to plant them.
  • This month is also a great time to plant your frost tolerant vegetables. These are vegetables that can still handle colder weather. Vegetables like carrots, kale, spinach, and Brussels sprouts. To make it easy, we’ve put together an article called 12 Frost Tolerant Vegetables to Plan in Early Spring.
  • According to Better Homes and Gardens, make sure to wait until the soil temperatures are in the 60s before you plant any heat-loving plants like, corn, green beans and cucumbers.

Perennials/Annuals

  • If any of your perennials seem to be overcrowded, take the time to divide them.
  • This month add planting your perennials and shrubs to you to-do list.

General Gardening Tips

  • While April shower do bring May flowers, we still need to be watering our plants.

Summary

Now that spring is here, I for one find myself wanting to be outside working in the garden as much as possible.
